Community writing project
November 7th, 2007
My friend Cat has come up with a new idea called the Community writing project which, on a basic level, is just 2 questions, Why do I blog and has blogging changed me? While this idea is good it gave me an even better one which i’ll post about soon.
Back to this idea though, I’ve been looking at new ways to bring people to look at my blog so I thought i’d go for this one and try and get Cat to advertise me a bit more.
Why do I blog? This question is a bit complex. If you look at the domain at the top it I says i-storys, this was the title of my first novel. I began writing a “Cyber Novel” (yea i think i’ll call it that) about 3 years ago. The whole idea/reason about i-storys was that a girl I thought I was in love with decided to screw over my life. I really couldn’t handle this so I wrote a novel and posted them on the MSN spaces; the idea was that I’d write a stylised version of the situation and before I wrote the conclusion, people would comment on how it should end.
In essence it was like a blog for support, I didn’t know how to get out of the situation I was in so I asked for help in the only way I could, through a story which “wasn’t” about me. I posted a new chapter every month and people loved it. Not only did I get all my friends reading it and bugging me for a new chapter, I got complete randomers as well!
I got fed up with msn spaces to I asked Jay to set me up with a proper site which he did but i needed a domain so I choose i-storys.
i-storys = Interactive stories/Internet stories.
Anyway, I have had several blogs since then, 1 on blogspot, 1 on the ignition site and now this one. I prefer this one as I have complete control over it and its the first thing I’ve ever truly owned. I own the domain and the webspace no matter how silly that sounds, it just makes me feel like I’m normal.
But getting back to the questions at hand, Why do I blog? I guess I feel that blogging is a way of expressing myself and crying out for help. Everyone comes to me with their problems but I’ve yet to find someone who can truly understand the sort of situations I get myself into. Everyone tries to help and I really appreciate it, but sometimes I just feel this lack of connection to even people stood right next to me. I guess the only person I could really connect to was my ex girlfriend, she was the one I felt closest to and the only person i’ve ever really opened up to.
Has blogging changed me? Yes. I’m not as stressed as I used to be, I still have problems, but this place is my escape from reality. I am often talking to Cat about the community that comes with her Wordpress site as it’s actually hosted by them. I felt the similar sort of thing with MSN spaces and, again with the social networking post, it did give a nice sense of community and that everyone was connected. But, if you have the right friends, I think you can build your own community.

Agree with you on that. When I moved from Wordpress.com to my own host I missed the community for a while but then found out that with my own group of friends I can build my own community.

Yea, that’s one of the wonders of having cyber friends, there are thousands of people out there to create a community with.
I help run a few forums and more than anything else, not content, not feature; community is what matters. As long as you have good friends, nothing else matters.

It’s all about community, however my problem is that I’m part of too many communities that don’t mix well..
Still, nice post, Matt.
Still waiting on that comments RSS though!

Never happy are we? :p I’m still working on it. It’s down to my annoyances with Wordpress.

Matt, how long have you known me now? Must be like two years now and you’re telling me you still don’t know me?!
You really should know by now that I’m hardly ever happy!

Well anyone still up for the comments RSS feed? With some careful sleuthing I found it. [Well it was just a google search for “Comments feed on WP 1.5″ but this is more dramatic. ]
Here it is : http://i-storys.co.uk/blog/?feed=comments-rss2

Heehee. No problem. I’d suggest burning your feeds with Feedburner if you aren’t going to update wordpress for some time, that way you’ll have easy to remember feed urls. You could even reroute your current subscribers to the new feed via the FeedSmith plugin. I use it and no problems.
